Did you know that there are two sets of lyrics to "On Wisconsin?"
There are two official versions of "On, Wisconsin." The fight song addresses the U.W. football team:
On, Wisconsin! On, Wisconsin! Plunge right through that line!
Run the ball clear down the field,
A touchdown sure this time. (U rah rah)
On, Wisconsin! On, Wisconsin!
Fight on for her fame
Fight! Fellows! - fight, fight, fight!
We'll win this game.
On, Wisconsin! On, Wisconsin!
Stand up, Badgers, sing!
"Forward" is our driving spirit,
Loyal voices ring.
On, Wisconsin! On, Wisconsin!
Raise her glowing flame
Stand, Fellows, let us now
Salute her name!
The State Song invokes pride and conjures an image of the state in relatively few words:
On, Wisconsin! On, Wisconsin!
Grand old Badger State!
We, your loyal sons and daughters,
Hail thee, good and great.
On, Wisconsin! On, Wisconsin!
Champion of the right,
"Forward", our motto,
God will give thee might![
This famous melody was composed in 1909 by W.T. Purdy, who had never set foot in Wisconsin. Carl Beck, a former U.W. student supplied the lyrics. John Philip Sousa has called On Wisconsin, "the finest of college marching songs." Rumors persist as to who owns the rights to "On Wisconsin," from Michael Jackson to Paul McCartney, but the song is considered to be in the public domain.
